Roots

Lonely days are coming
Just around the bend
It’s felt this way before
It will feel this way again

A comical facade
A disappearing shell
This dependency on others
That we think we do so well

I stood before Him once
I’ll stand before Him then
I will stand alone
No matter partner, child or friend

The days are fleeting
Like cloud shadows on a hill
I hunker down and hide inside
And pray only for His will

A sapling in the forest
Protected by its kin
Covered from the onslaught
Of nature’s brutal wind

A sapling in the meadow
Bracing storms alone
Made stronger in the struggle
Deeper roots are grown
